ISTR that Nicci has said that in this situation, the standard IATA rule which David-A describes is now the effective restriction. However, for LHR-HKG/SFO-LHR, the surface sector is longer than either of the flown sectors so if that is the rule then this would not work.

Indeed, even on the new BA paid ticket open-jaw rule (the surface sector must not be the longest of the three sectors), LHR-HKG/SFO-LHR would not work. Interestingly, ITA will price a VS itinerary based on a discount LHR-HKG fare combined with a Y class LHR-SFO fare, but the VS website will not offer it.
Correct. See:
Open jaw redemptions
•I am unclear as to the current limits of what we are allowed to open-jaw as return awards from the UK. (Obviously this only really applies to [Chase] 241s, as otherwise they could be booked as two one-ways.)

e.g. East and West Coast USA?
USA and Canada or Mexico or Caribbean?
Peking and Japan or Singapore?
North and South Africa?
West and East Europe?

Unfortunately this is not as straightforward as publishing in a table I’m afraid. Open Jaws are permitted provided the surface sector is not longer than the flight sectors. This is driven by IATA ruling.
