I'm going to MUC in December yet again, and this time, I'm planning to get a long-overdue LH-branded Rimowa L (still undecided on the actual model). However, there are two points I'm unclear about: transport of the newly-bought item and VAT refund.

1) I might be excessively optimistic here, but does LH make it any easier for the buyer to take the newly bought luggage home? Would they perhaps allow me to check it in (if it's still wrapped and I have the receipt and boarding pass) alongside my regular luggage at no additional cost? Or is it just another piece regardless? After all, it's cost- and labour-saving for them if I take it myself instead of having it shipped.

2) Normally, to get a VAT refund, one has to show the goods to the airside customs office. However, the WorldShop at T2 is located landside. I obviously can't check the item in as a luggage piece when I'm past security. How is the refund process handled then?

Thanks a bunch for any input.
1. Your comments are certainly a very good idea, but LH does not offer any discounting or excess baggage fees being waived for a purchase of LH Rimowa models, via catalogue or in person at the LH Worldshop.

It is of course possible to pack, or repack your items in a larger new Rimowa case along the way; I have packed our carry-on Salsa Air cases easily in a Salsa Sports trunk ( and an LH-Rimowa XXL case when the first polycarbonates were manufactured ) that was then checked through.

In fact years ago I did see a customer enter the LH Skyshop in town ( before it became Worldhop ) with a clear plastic bag containng his clothing to buy a new LH RImowa case. Other than a raised eyebrow or two, nothing was said by the sales staff when the traveller repacked, and left towing his case behind him. Very professional !

2. Technically, the traveller seeking a refund on qualified German purchases will need to present the item and receipts to the inspectors BEFORE clearing customs and boarding flights leaving Germany. You cannot pack, check your new luggage, and then seek your refund, as your luggage cannot be verified.

For new buyers, please be advised that your Rimowa luggage cases are individually numbered, which will be verified against your item Nr. purchase receipt, when inspected for refund costs.

So, 2 trips to the airport, or as most of us do, go early, and during normal business hours, if seeking a refund.
