It seems this changed. Last week in MUC, I handled my BP and proceeded to look for my card, when the agent said "I don't need it, I can see on your BP that you're *G" and let me in... I thought it was a fluke, but the same thing happened in FRA (2x) and MUC (3x) already since then... perhaps a new procedure, but good news to us UA *G members who insist on forgetting the card at home!
