The smart thing to do - although UA seems only creative these days with comming up with not smart things to do - would have been to have the crew fly the plane and pax 1/2 way, that is to ANC, assuming that they had the work hours to do so which I suspect that they had and concurrently positioned a relief flight crew at ANC to take over the aircraft and continue to Newark. If there wasn't enough time to fly the crew in on a scheduled commerical flight then have them fly up there on a corporate jet which the PVG-ANC crew could then fly home once they slept. But it has been a long time since I have seen creativity come to operations.
