I joined AAdvantage in early 90s ,so no idea about those non-expire miles.
Redemptions are first taken from "new miles", not "old miles". As long as you continue to earn miles that exceed your redemptions, there is no reason to touch the grandfathered old miles. As a result, I still have 224,000 old miles.
