Another option is to search for an economy return flight online. After selecting flights, when BA.com makes the upsell offer for WTP, upgrade the outbound flight. Then MFU the WTP to Club (hopefully availability will still be there...). I suppose it can be done in one step via telephone.
It's not 100% Avios booking this way, but probably the final cost will be more reasonable than the one-way Y.
