I think you will find many airlines charge a fortune for one-way flights.
Infact, BA are one of the airlines that led the way with regard to selling one-way seats at sensible prices - on the shorthaul network in Europe.
Longhaul cash one-ways are dificult to find for sensible money (yes, number of exceptions).
Leading the way is pushing it. They were led down that way by the fact of being in the UK which had the earliest and most competitive LCC market and felt that they had to follow to remain competitive at the lower end of the market.
