Although you avoid the taxes for domestic travel, if you want to travel first class, be prepared to fork over roughly 3x the required coach miles (i.e. 330K for two in first to Hawaii, a saver first award for two on AA is around 150K and anytime is still less than BA at 300K).
It really depends where you are starting from. If you're in the Bay Area or Southern California, you can fly roundtrip on an AA or AS nonstop to Hawaii for only 75K Avios per person in F. (If you're starting from the Eastern U.S., it's a whole different story.)
