As far as I know, a crew member can tell you to take your seat at any time for any reason...including to facilitate meal/bev service. They don't want Y pax up front for a variety of reasons. But I know of no FAA ban, other than congregating near the front lav, that bans briefly visiting a family member on either side of the magic curtain. Hanging out in the galley...clearly not cool.
