The OP's routing is fine. Changing the flight will incur a fee if inside 21 days unless you waitlist the desired segment in advance. You can do that after the reservation is confirmed so long as the pending segment is UA metal.

Thanks Seth!...that's exactly what Im trying to do... Another question you might be able to answer ; is this all possible to do it online or do I have to call?
When I put this itinerary under multt-city, the first flight which I wanted didn't even come up....but if I do one way, the flight shows up...
