I think the above comments are the points some are missing.

Discression is paramount with dealing with outside food. IME, the people who I have see asked to eat outside have had one or more of the following occur:
  • Walking in the club BP/UC card in one hand, McDonalds bag in the other.
  • Food in those rigid plastic carryout kits... cracking the plastic to open it.
  • Making a mess all over
  • Asking if the bartender had any forks.

FWIW, I do like the no outside food rule (and I personally do not skirt the rule), but if I can't see (or can tell) you are eating.... I am OK with it.
