Well, I can only speak personally, and from my personal perspective, you are completely and totally wrong. I fly on (and have status with) many airlines, including a number which offer this benefit. It's unpublished. It made me feel nice. Sorry. Sometimes there's only one or two empty seats, and I've gotten it. Also, lots of times I haven't. No issues there. If the plane is full obviously you won't get it - I think you severly underestimate people if you think they cannot understand such a simple concept.

I never heard of an AA EXP saying they'd never fly AA again because they didn't get on the cleared list. It happens all the time, it would seem those people would be filtered out very, very early.

Does matter to me when a benefit if it is to have any real measurable benefit is going to impact other people.
This post is so full of holes I don't know where to start. Priority bags means everyone else is delayed until after yours. Priority boarding mean people must get on after you and may not have room for their bags. Though it's not policy, priority disembarking makes everyone wait behind the back of the crew as First/CW get off.

All of these things "impact" other people in a measurable way - tell me, do you give up on these all just to see the bigger picture? Sillyness.
