No need in booking a dummy reservation. UA.com has a procedure to check the remaining balance, albeit not intuitive.

From the Home Page:

Deals & Offers > Promotional Certificates

Under the drop-down box for programs select Electronic Travel Certificate.

Enter PIN and submit
