You talk about it as if there would be no expectation. There will be expectation and plenty of wringing of hands when it isn't received. There is no benefit to BA at all if it isn't a published benefit and you won't get any warm fuzzy feeling inside when it is something which yo won't often benefit from as domestics are frequently full.
I never saw this on BMI in quite a few years of travelling with them, GCHs seemed to happily accept this was a 'best endevours' benefit and if they didn't get it they didn't cause a scene at all. Not sure how AA publicise their upgrade benefit but maybe they are bigging it up a little more than they should?
