OK, i'm going to take the OP's side. He had a 1st class international ticket. BA should be moving mountains, even if it wasn't their fault whatsoever. The point of paying so much is for service that exceeds even what could reasonably be expected.
If the OP had a TATL First Class fare originating in Italy they could have paid less than a YPlus TATL passenger from the UK
