I don't know the answer to your original question, but they probably require their club membership to get their online check-in now. It's their way of encouraging your membership in their program (same as with the free wifi at other places).
We're going around in circles here. I stated in the OP that Nok requires pax to be a member of their Fan Club in order to checkin online and it costs 200 THB for some (unknown by me) period. There's also a requirement that the member be a legal resident of Thailand, not that that's relevant to this discussion.
My question was, and still is, how long this requirement has been in play since I'm pretty sure we've done online checkin previously and have never been a member of Nok's Fan Club (whatever that is).
