Thanks all for your views. I understand that BA is free to choose not to assist in forwarding my bag to me as I made a mistake. What surprised me, and the point of my post was surprise at BA's nonchalance when I told them it was not possible for me to return to LHR today for reasons I explained to them. I mistakenly assumed that what I would get from BA was an offer of assistance in getting the MAD bag back to its owner immediately. Instead I was told to return the MAD bag as soon as reasonably possible. We couldn't do that today. Rest assured we will try tomorrow. The comment as to end of the week was my incredulous "even if it took till the of the week?" response to the refusal of BA to offer assistance to get the bag back to the MAD passenger.
