Just wanted to bump this thread to point out that the Frequent Visitor eChannel is now available at land crossings as well as at HKG -- I've saved a ton of time in the last few weeks at Lo Wu thanks to this. Applications are still processed only at HKG as far as I know, but once you've registered, you can use the e-Channel anywhere.
