Caveats.
  • There are a few countries where Skype is blocked in order to protect revenue streams from landline or wireless phones.
  • If your smartphone is not connected via WiFi, you could be paying an exorbitant rate for international data roaming -- unless you have obtained an in-country SIM card (which requires that your phone be unlocked). Skype audio calls don't use much bandwidth, but it can still add up. Check your wireless carrier's rates for international data roaming before you leave.
