Skype (or any other forms of VOIP) is good for calling the US cheap from overseas if you have good wifi signal. I think the key is getting good wifi signal as many airport lounge wifi networks get quite crowded with resultant limited bandwidth.
Skype works over 3G now as well, at least in the US. Haven't tested if that's true overseas yet, however.
It's a lifesaver when traveling -- especially when calling US 800 numbers.
