The PJs are yours to keep on every airline. They don't want to re-use them for obvious reasons.
I am surprised that your UA Crew was even attentive enough to see what you were wearing.
I change into PJs on all my transoceanic flights (I don't sleep in me clothes at home, why would I on an airplane?) and I've never had any reaction from the crew. Then again I do use very simple dark PJs (no plaid, piping, etc).
