This probably means that you will fly on a Delta jet but that the ticket was sold by Virgin as a "codeshare" (on the way to the states).
On the way home, you will probably fly a Delta jet to LAX, then probably a Virgin Australia jet from LAX-SYD

Probably the most useful, as you could get free flights within Australia.
