Providing you don't fly deeply-discounted economy tickets, 80k AAdvantage miles are the same as 80k Avios. In both schemes you get 1 mile/avios for every mile flown. For example, I did LHR-SFO-LAX-LAS-LHR in B (full-fare economy) on BA recently. This one trip, which earned me just over 25k avios, and 180TPs as a sapphire, would have earned me almost 19k EQM's. In both cases you earn almost 33% of your re-qualifying target.
