This isn't always true. In Japan, the exchange services at the airports typically mirror what you'll get at a local bank and are far better on fees than American banks.

If possible, exchange money with friends or colleagues who have regular access to your needed currency. They won't charge you a fee on top of the official rate unless they really dislike you.

OTOH, never exchange money at an American airport.

Let me also add, always assume that the technology will fail when you get there. Bring multiple backups and never, ever put them in checked baggage.
