Mr Walsh said that some of the 42 slots would be allocated to direct services to fast-growing cities in China such as Guangzhou and Shenyang and South American destinations such as Santiago in Chile.
The first intercontinental route using a BMI slot — a service to Seoul — will be launched in December and others to Vietnam and Malaysia are being considered.
