Isnt their a light that they can use?
I would only force the issue to open the shade if the plane was on descent or takeoff.
Im not surprised by the FA's response. I'm not sure it was the right thing, but I'm guessing from their perspective, flyers are adults, and as such, should be able to resolve this issue.
