THe gates are close technically, but you will have a walk from your arrival gate, in a glassed in corridor above the normal departure gates (you can look out and see the terminal ops) to CBP. From there you will go through CBP and can use the dedicated TSA line (it just for inbound int'l pax and it lets you out back at terminal D/E take a left (south) and you come out in E and it fairly close to your gate. if you are in C you will have a longer walk or can take the elevated tram.
