On this note, is it easy to upgrade the cards? If he/she gets Green or Zync and decides to upgrade to Platinum a few months later, will it be possible? Will it have another hard pull?

Then again, I suppose the plat card has a better signup bonus, so it might make more sense to just apply for it seperately.
