It's not necessarily safer but there's less chance of it being lost. Gate-checked items are loaded directly. No "good strong" box will keep your car seat from being "misrouted".
Yes, but having a totally broken seat that arrived at its destination is about as helpful as an unbroken seat that never made it all the way.
