I was flying EDI to BOS yesterday, with a connection at LHR. I saw the signs saying "ask us about an upgrade", so I ended up paying to upgrade my WT ticket to WT+ for the LHR->BOS segment.

I was a bit pressed for time... one lady I spoke to said I would earn tier points and miles for WT+. Another said I would get more than WT but not the same as WT+, because paid airport upgrades don't qualify for full points/miles.

Anyone know the correct answer?


Also, how commonly are these upgrades offered? I am flying BOS-DME next month. WT tickets are just under $1000, WT+ are around $2400. I would be perfectly happy to pay to upgrade at the airport if it's something that is commonly available and take the chance that it won't be. But if it's a rare occurrence to see these offers, I may upgrade with miles in advance.
