I discovered Hilton Gold is quite easy to get. With my Amex platinum I get a year free (which I've decided to use because I had a few stays in places that IHG didn't have any or a decent offering) and I've been happy with the benefits - lounge access where available, free breakfast and internet access.

If you sign up for the Hilton Visa you can get gold if you spend £10000 in a calendar year which I may consider doing if I can't maintain gold on my own.
