American Express does have a peculiar house style in which extraneous adjectives are inserted for emphasis. American Express practice also often deviates from published policy, typically in the customers' favor. In this example I believe the UK practice is that an existing customer for new account bonus purposes is anyone who has a Membership Rewards account in their system. If I recall correctly, it takes six months after all MR cards are closed for the rewards account to disappear.
