Y7 probably means that the flight is already oversold by several seats or at least it's very full. Remember that DL always overbooks, selling more tickets than they have seats, and on most flights they're willing to overbook by more than seven in coach.

Moving four people to this flight for free several days in advance would probably be costly for DL. This explains why the OP was offered the switch to the ATL connection when he called.
