There are lots of gay people (mostly men) who seek to live in a little gay bubble. When these people travel, they generally want to go to a place where everyone else is gay, where everyone behaves/dresses/thinks just like at the gay bars back home, and where they might be able to hook up with someone by the hotel pool.
The entire concept seems horrific to me, but to each his own.
It's equally possible that they just want to get away from straight people. My partner isn't big on PDA, but it gets really tiring if you constantly have to look over your shoulder just because you're holding another guy's hand. It's nice to be in a place where you won't be hassled because you hold someone's hand or God forbid, actually kiss a person of the same sex.
