I think they know they are perfectly safe but some people can be a bit wary of anything 'new'.
I remember well when the first twin engined aircraft started flying across the Atlantic. There were quite a lot of experienced flyers who would avoid flying on them if there were other 4 engined options available....I suspect there are a few similar minded people still about even after all those years.
My first TATL trip on one was on a Wardair A310 flight from YYZ-PIK. I couldn't believe that an aircraft with only two engines was capable of flying such a long distance.
