Access to the CCR (if travelling ex LHR/JFK), better chance of being upgraded, better chance of beeing looked after if something goes wrong. I'd say once you have top status it is worth flying to enjoy the perks of that status rather than trying to get status with someone else....

As a "mere" Gold I don't really fly enough to enjoy the Flounge etc. so I can imagine it is exacerbated if you are GGL.
