If the bags aren't tagged through then the rule is generally 4 hours. Get them tagged through in SYD as suggested above or pay a few bucks for the left luggage facility would be my suggestions. Sadly, however, that second suggestion seems to be a no-go as there are no left luggage facilities at LAX. http://www.lawa.org/welcome_LAX.aspx?id=1600
