I thought I’d share. Amex informed me today that the hiring a car through Zip Car is not covered by the Platinum Card’s Hire Car Insurance as it is a car club. This insurance normally means you do not need to pay for additional insurance when hiring a car to reduce the accidental damage liability to £0. Normally in the case of an accident in a hire car you can be liable for anywhere between £1000 and £250, typically.

I presume the insurance still covers normal rentals from, say Hertz, when you pay by the hour but just not in the event of hiring a car through a car club. This exception, at least to me, isn’t obvious so I thought I would share.
