I'm afraid to say you always thought wrong then Sorry! This is how it's always been that I recall (should be in the T&Cs booklet you got when you first got membership too). If it's a 4 class plane you could try to redeem* from A instead and go in F?

*as in they let you convert A/D to Z/U class and make a redemption as normal.
