You're not talking about LHR T3 are you? If so, that is not the only way to the gates from security. I don't usually go through the shops to get to the gate, although I sometimes (ahem, often?) walk over to the shops if I have things to buy after exiting security.
I am often quite critical of LHR, but it is worth pointing out that:-
1. The only way from the main security to the terminal at ZRH is through the middle of a poorly designed duty free shop.
2. The only way from arrivals to baggage reclaim at GVA is through the middle of a poorly designed duty free stop.
Can you see the theme here? Personally I find it really grates. If I want to shop, I will go in the shop. If I have to go through it, it just annoys me.
