It happened to us on a prepaid reservation many years ago at an Embassy Suites property and we were "walked" to a Doubletree (both brands under same parent company Hilton).
In our situation we arrived around Midnight following our late flight arrival. Knowing we'd be arriving late, would it have been beneficial to contact the hotel earlier in the day and checked in over the phone and secured a room assignment?
On late arrivals it is always a good idea to confirm that you are in fact coming. I put it in the notes of the reservation and have called when I knew the hotel was at capacity.
Some brands allow you to check-in online.
