Edit I just noticed you are going the day after tomorrow and will have to leave early. Looks like the fares are higher perhaps because of the time or because of such short notice. Here's a link to Thursdays schedules and fares:

Thank for the link and tip. We shall not be travelling for another few months.
I think Platform 13 & 14 = Gatwick Express and the departure times are always .00, .15, .30 and .45.
It also appears if we have bought tickets on the Southern train, it’s for specific train. If we are late and miss the train, we shall have to buy new tickets. Conversely, if we are early, we shall not be able to take an earlier train. However, the Gatwick Express is for “any time”.
I shall decide when it comes closer.
I assume all trains are the same with luggage racks, etc.
