Lucky me, I am supposed to take it later this summer.
As stanscan opined upthread about IAD-GRU, the HKG 744s have a ~17 hour layover in HKG (at least until they restart 744 service HKG-SIN). The inbound flight is scheduled to land ~6p local, but the return flight to ORD departs ~11a local, so the bird sits on the ground quite a while. Lots of slush time in there to make up for delayed flights.
744s in NRT, on the other hand, seem to turn right around and operate on the return flight 3 hours after landing.
You also have to look at the route in general. CX flies a 777 on this route, their on-time performance is only 46%.
