I have been held on AA before so they they could free the gate.

2 hour delay was caused by restricted landing numbers at destination so AA boarded pax, did not tell them of the delay until after the plane had pulled away from the gate to a quite spot in the airport.

I suspect it is also to avoid pax trying to off-load themselves requiring their bags to be found and unloaded as well.
