But frankly, I'd rather travel/stay somewhere that I will enjoy than maximizing point value.

I'll gladly take a Christmas Week at the Steamboat Sheraton (which I have done), over a week at the Charlotte Airport. I'll suffer knowing I could have earned 6x the "value" of my points as I'm taking the daily tour with Billy Kidd through the powder (which I've also done).

Even in the same category. I'm sure the St. Regis in NY is very nice, but a week in the winter in NYC doesn't excite me, regardless of how nice the property is.
