Stupid questions re US pay phones (esp at ORD)

Wasn't sure where to post this... I hope this is the right place...

So my wife (who is Japanese and does not have a cell phone that works in the US) will be transiting ORD soon and I want her to be able to call me. I haven't used a pay phone in years, so I'm wondering if they still exist and if they're easy to use??? Do they have slots for credit cards? I also have a calling card number she can use. But to use it she has to dial an 800 number first. Do pay phones require any money to make 800 number calls? Or does she just pick up the phone, dial 1-800-xxx-xxxx and she's good to go?

Thanks for any help!
