Airline management have detailed financial models that spit out these decisions. Threads debating these issues are nothing more than drivel unless Flyertalkers can produce their own detailed calculations/models refuting management determinations.
Actual customers/flyers expressing opinions about their preference is not drivel. It is genuinely useful and is probably a big part of the reason UA Insider is here.
I always thought the armchair analysis was for our amusement, not for UA's benefit, kind of like Monday morning quarterbacking.
Back when I worked at AA, I would sometimes fly with the head of capacity planning and the head of route planning. They themselves would speculate about some of the fleet assignments on the flights we'd be on.
