If he had the option of buying SQ in the first place and spent $10k to fly UA then he may not have made a smart decision all round. The HKG-SIN hop hardly is the only blemish on the whole experience. BOS-EWR-SIN (or BOS-FRA/LHR-SIN) is the way to do that journey.
