I don't know if's still the same but there was an even more risible example at Liverpool. After check-in, following signs to gates took you up stairs, along a tortuous route through shops, pubs, eateries, more shops, the full length of the terminal, then ... down stairs to ground floor to near to where you started. It was so blatant it was laughable.
Hold the back pages, terminal building designed to get passengers into the shops.

The thing is i just totally ignore the shops, while BAA may herd passengers around the terminal like sheep in the hope they will drop large chunks of cash in the shops, nobody is holding a gun to your head and making you shop at Gucci, Paul Smith, Bulgari ect ect. Just walk right by.

You should try a visit to MAN terminal 1, as soon as your through security BOOM your in the middle of a large duty free shop.
