As you suggest in your OP, it's really a question of priorities, and disposable, rather than gross income. Almost all my travel is for leisure, and I buy a lot of international F and J fares. I have a fairly high income, but I'm single with no dependants, and I really enjoy flying. I doubt if I'd be able to do it if I had a family, for example.
